November 2 is Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, throughout Mesoamerica. This cultural celebration of the ancestors whose labour and love built the foundations of our lives is now also observed in the US, with everything from parades to parties.
This year, several businesses are putting together a Dia de los Muertos in Dunsmuir. Please come visit and check out some of the cool activities we have planned!
La Perla de Nayarit will be offering food specials all day, featuring seasonal favourites such as atole, a thick hot chocolate drink, and seasoned corn.
The Sacred Well will be hosting Mayan Priestess Shuni Giron, who will give a lecture about the Mayan Calendar on Friday, Nov 1, and who will be doing Mayan astrology readings on Nov 2 from 11am-4pm.
You can also bring a copy of a photo of a loved one to The Sacred Well at 2pm where you can purchase a novena candle in your choice of colour for $5. Glue sticks will be provided, and you can glue the photo onto your candle and place it on our large ofrenda, or memorial altar to the beloved dead. The offend will be tended by the Mt Shasta Goddess Temple.
At 4pm, you are invited to bring flowers and meet at the entrance to the Dunsmuir Cemetery. Everyone will do a quiet memorial walk among the graves, and leave the flowers as offerings to those whom you know, or those whose graves are generally untended.
Spirits Bar will be offering tequila specials into the evening.
More activities will be added, so check back closer to the date to see what else we have going on!
