The word alchemy refers to the preparation of an elixir, or a "Philosopher's Stone" by the ancient Egyptians, and it comes from the Arabic word al-kimia. The word kimia comes from the Coptic khem, which means "blackness" and is both a reference to the fertile black soil of the Nile delta, and also to the unfathomable mystery of the prima materia, or the essential matter from which all emerges and to which all returns. The word alchemy is actually the origin of the modern word chemistry, and it was once considered a mystical science.
Our world is currently in a process of transformation, with many ideas, stories, and beliefs in flux. The changes will impact each of us uniquely. We are collectively returning to the prima materia of society itself, beckoned to take better care of the dark fertile Earth, entreated to draw forward new ways of being. Amidst all of this change and uncertainty, alchemical symbols offer us an opportunity to envision a new world, new possibilities, and new opportunities. We have the chance to make gold from the past, to mine the nuggets of wisdom from our previous experiences and ways of being.
Join Yeshe Matthews, historian and occultist, at Milk & Honey in Sebastopol on Feb 25 at 7pm for this magical one-hour workshop to create a personal manifestation sigil using classical alchemical symbols representing the elements, the alchemical processes, and words that are relevant to your desired goals. In this hour-long session, we will learn more about how to work with these potent symbols, and then create art pieces to reflect the new now that we wish to co-create. All materials provided, but if you have a favorite pen, pencil, or marker, please bring it to use in crafting your sigil.
Sliding scale of $10 - $20 for this workshop, with no one turned away for lack of funds.
